Tokyo Ramen (Shoyu) – $10.50

A while back DL and I heard about a new ramen establishment opening up in the heart of Sydney. Opened by Harunobu Inukai of Blancharu, Ramen Ikkyu has quietly infiltrated into the highly competitive ramen scene in Sydney. This time, the little shop took a page out of Gumshara and opted for the food court approach. Located in a corner of the Sussex Centre Food Court, this unassuming ramen shop produces a limited number of bowls each day on a focused and limited menu.

I went back to basics and ordered the Tokyo Ramen with a shoyu base. The broth was light, well seasoned with a clear ginger taste and came with beautifully done pieces of chashu pork. The noodles were still springy and not mushy and overcooked.

Seaweed Ramen – $13.00

DL ordered the Seaweed Ramen, which came heavily lined with mountains of seaweed. Lavish cuts of pork once again topped the bowl and were utterly divine.

Here at Ikkyu you can also order a second serving of ramen for free if you wish to make the most out of your remaining broth. And why wouldn’t you?

Personally one of the best parts of eating in a food court is simply having the option to mix and match your meals to your desire. Both DL and I are suckers for water spinach, Malaysian style. This is our obligatory victory plate.

If you’re around the busy Haymarket district, perhaps on a night out at the Chinatown nightmarkets, drop by Ikkyu and enjoy one of Chef Harunobu’s delicious creations. You won’t regret it.
