My Other Brother – Camberwell, Melbourne.

Melbourne. Undoubtedly the food capital of Australia (Sorry Sydney!). The place is a gastronomical melting pot of cafes and restaurants from all around the world. It’s one of those places that make you pick up the phone and call your flight carrier to confirm that ‘Carry-on” does not include the weight you slap on during your stay.
Nicely tucked away behind Burke road and facing the Carpark (which holds the Sunday Camberwell market) is My Other Brother; a eastern suburb sibling of a Fitzroy-based cafe called The Annoying Brother . The cafe offers a good number of tables with longer than usual trading hours, allowing coffee addicts like myself an opportunity to grab a late piccolo latte on a lazy sunday afternoon.
The coffee menu is fairly extensive from your House blends to your single origins. You can order your stock standard Espresso based variants or go try their Cold drips,V60 pour overs and Syphon coffee.
The V60 produced a very light and sweet flavour profile with a light-medium but well rounded body. What’s V60 you ask? It’s a type of brewing method used by the Japanese. It’s one of those methods that you can’t really do during your morning rush. The process requires a special kettle, good coffee beans and most of all…patience.
Another brewing method which is probably more familiar to the Sydney Cafe scene is the cold drip, a delicate and lengthy process of cold water extraction over 5-9 hours. A personal favourite of mine, as it develops a multilevel flavour profile that would have otherwise would have been covered up by the hot water extraction method used in a common espresso machine.
The Food available at my other brother is what you’d expect from a Melbourne cafe, a good selection of truffle eggs, mushroom stacks and freshly smoked salmon. Our personal favourite is the DIY Breakfast, giving us ultimate freedom to choose the things that interest us and leave out the things that don’t.
Overall the experience was a good one, staff were knowledgable and efficient. The food did not disappoint. I don’t have a brother, But I wouldn’t mind adopting this one.
